PADIAN.... BANJARMASIN ... "Floating Market"

PADIan .....  known to Brunei.... used to be... women traders.... paddling sampan...'perahu' ...or canoe... small boat.....with a large round hat to protect from direct sunlight....or rain..???  selling.... usually daily fresh products or dried salted...fishes... and many... necessities of the year 50s nnn 60s.... nnn earlier...History written by severals European visitors to Brunei....  loll...

NOW... NON existence .... except old pictures taken..... on d' website... 

Brunei was popularly known as  VENICE of d' EAST..... coz d' water villages as called "Kampong Ayer".

Water Village still here but....power boats ...as new technologies taken place....  nnn more...people are now moving to lands....   where ...in search of more productivities.... sophisticated vehicles are there...too ???? 
Houses are still there... but... modern ... new with central sewages... being controlled nn maintained d' infrastructure..if continue building on rivers...????

D' word  PADIAN ...itself   sounds..similarity to...Paddling... paddle....??? Might be earlier..European Visitors...... "Orang Putih".... called them...nnn  ... missed heard..by Malay Brunei people at that time.....nnn.... so... d' name....stayed... a slight improvement to sound... Bruneian...   eeehh       just assumed.... Non Historian proof   .....lol...

Existence of  Brunei....floating market .... in 50s....  Female- Entrepreneurs monopolized... what we could called now..

DAY 8....  23 December 2010... Thursday...

     WHAt about this BLog ..... ??? ..d' connection ???

.............all ...about Banjarmasin....  ????

WHY... here.....  CURIOUS ..to know....agreed with others to see "FLOATING MARKET" as popularly known in Borneo...nn second to Thailand...

People said....Uu...would NOT complete going to Banjarmasin... if...NOT visited this Floating Market....  wow... so great....

Me... wanted to show my children too... as they would NOT see... any longer.. in Brunei.... as once ..a lonnng time ago.... a very near photocopy..... ???

As told.... two places... d' farthest... known as LOK BAINTAN Floating Market... most paddling traders would be there... nnn  last... late morning.....while .... ONE near by...MUARA KUIN ...now reachable by vehicles...... would finish early    ...morning...

So.... d' choice was d' most paddlers' traders  ... nn early departure by boat.. needed to reach there .... would take...one hour ...more....

10 of us hired a boat  ...cost Rp 250,000.... while a Guide.. TADI accompanied by a friend  ...also needed payment  ....Rp200,000....
Travelling distance ..... would be .... about 2 kilometers....... by boat  ....

Parked our cars in a safe place.... near d' station's jetty of waiting boat...

A long boat... with strong roof... but for the seating's  height between floor nn roof was just as tall as more than a meter... just nice for sitting only...Asian...NOT European...lol...  D' roof was strong... could sit..or stand ..there.... meant for two stories... lower nn upper...

So ... morning..... before dawn.... still .... dark....slowly.... morning light...emerged.....all in boat of 10 plus driver..nn two accompanied guides.....

Some people called d' houses...as floating... BUT to my observation.... houses were built on stilt pillars...just above d' water... two stories too... strong built houses...

We were going upstream.... against...d' water.. Do... Uuu believe... NOT salty....  fresh water.... from upper lands... this MATAPURA river....

At this season....December... supposed to be many rains...  so water.....raised... to certain height...touching d' floor of d' houses...

Still going up stream... slowly... but steady..looking around...both sides of  Martapura River..... 

Now day light... morning.... people just woke up... males...females...children.... having morning bathing.. just around back doors... their jetties ...nn front landings...  too..

People here make use...d' water.... NOT clear water...little milky looked.... lol..

Nice to see... lives... peoples... water....... houses... with different fashioned....big...small...old... but most wooden....zinc roof...

A Long boat...with full housed passengers......  with uniforms...

Children were going to school... picked up by hired long boat... a bus typed..

Religious uniforms...look-a liked..   here...   population 99 percent Muslims... 


No worry of going to boat's roof coz... boat was moving  quite stable... so posing....for pictures...

LIves Go ON ..... relaxing .... early morning ....
Bathing ... brushing teeth ...nEED NOt..... water from d' taps ... abundant of fresh WATer here  ... just step out from doors .....there Uuu 're ... !!!!!
Early Morning activities  ....... just observed  .... nn photos taken... ..........sorry !!

So...d' exciting scene.... 
Now emerged slowly.... few boats.. with paddlers...moving themselves together... inside varieties of selling materials....  local called d' boat as... "jukung"...

Any reason....??? 

First... see what.... they were doing.....?????? 

LIVEs GO On ........ children were busy to attend schooling ......... too

A main HANGing bridge .... crossing ..nn connecting d' other mainland becomes so important ......... students crossing ....early morning ... 

LOOk carefully ...d' BRidge ..    LOK BAINTAN Hanging Bridge ....

BOats .......also became main transportation here to fetch students  to attend schools ......from house to house .....nn dropped them at d' jetty to walk to school ...

From d' bridge' NAMe   ...... here ....d' place of paddling traders were kown as LOK BAINtan Floating Market .....

Our boat was going  ..nearer to group of stick together traders... 

WHO were selling...???

WHO were buying...???

UU.. would NOT see.... foreign people here... except tourists with boats.. with cameras...   a few only...

Needed times to UNDERSTAND....

Uu could buy.. from boats traders....if wanted too.....  just asked.

D' PRODUCTs...   like bananas... local green...limes... oranges...   green vegetables...all fresh...

Coconuts too... a lot...

Had to see... nearer... these women traders... were individually.....brought with them multi local fresh products...

TADI... paid .. guide's name ..... just met.. this morning... coz last night...made arrangement with his friend... he accompanied European tourists.. here too... 

Background....  d' specified destination of " LOK Baintan Floating Market".... to remember....   !!!

NICE....from d' upper crossing view.. of d' whole traders altogether....

They were moving downstream.... flowing the water movement......

Among them chatting... might bargaining each others....

TOURISTS were here.. to record memories.... of... uniqueness

D' BEauty was there ......  paddling as source of income .... but..

.....early education as important as anything else .... 

.....just pass around to new generation ......

A house.... looked grand..... must be somebody.... doing good business... here... two stories house...

LOK Baintan ..... floating market still...alive coz... vehicles...were NOT yet penetrable to this area....

Just behind... houses were DRY land... where plantation... for the local products... on sales now....

Narrow....  small... roads were made to go to town as well... as motor bikes could easily passed through.... as guides said....

Bananas..... seemed...luxurious here..... empty boats... here too..   WHY..???

 Among d' traders.... as  buyers for middle men... so bought cheap bargain products to be resale at market places in town.... 

LOCAL word.. for the products sold among themselves...nn.. neighbours called " panyambangan"...

How...  to gain profits for simple buying and selling among them.... Barter...trade... exchanged with same value products.... also exist here....

Barter Trading... transaction... between traders known here as..."BAPADUK"...

but MOST...paying CASH...as our guide told us....

Observed carefully... pictures of HANGING BRIDGE... crossing Martapura River from one landing to another...was first seen... FAR...

Later..... as water moved...down stream...so..these trades....followed d'flow of stream's current....  now just below the Walking Hanging Bridge...

Food.. on selling.....among d' "junkung" .....  here too...

A kind of red coloured mee...  sweet as Tadi said.... so eating with mixed ...rice fried small hot shrimps on banana leave.... just did enough for morning breakfast...  ????

Hard to deny.... if  Uuu... stay here....  Uuu would NOT go far to look for WC...

Look at....a box alike.. rectangle..square..walled.. then...     recognizable...   location....   that would fi nd... WC

Following down stream's current was easy... fast...... almost just past 9.00..am....still early... 

Curiosity.. still..... Questions....nn answers... needed....???

SOTO YANA YANI......Eating House specially for MEE...only... noodles...lol....a place demanded well by local customers...  as told...

Another BIG old house.. Year..1925.... just on frontage  river bank....NOT to be demolished..   as well remembered in Banjarmasin History....  during colonialism... of Hollanders..... d' house to be renovated .... but now still in used....

ORANGE building.....only HOLES... NO windows..  wow... special house for birds... yooow..

BUT ...money.... out of birds' nests... great demand nowadays... Chinese... No... all people..lol.. 

Playing... all round d' sounds..music of birds...24 hours.. attracted more...  nn    ...more money...

Time to leave...good bye.. Martapura River...
